One of the important things to remember, though, is that when you're openly out and in public positions of this kind - whilst you must fight like a tiger to take up issues of LGBT+ equality - you mustn't let that become the only thing that defines you. You have to throw yourself into many other causes and campaigns for change. I am lucky, in that I was surrounded by love and support. I appreciate that not everyone can say the same. I don’t have the typical journey that people expect, I have a mother who learnt to play the piano on her Steinway and a father that had his own successful company at 28. I was privately educated and lived in the countryside, in the 1970’s this was rare, in the 2000’s I occasionally get asked if I was adopted. On the whole I think the world has turned, some are more curious about differences rather than scared. I find ignorance to be the basis of the comments that I have received in the past, only through recognising that and educating people will that change. I know we have a long way to go still. We need to be more visible. Certain doors in the City are still closed to people like me; all I can do is wedge open the ones I have forced myself through. When multiple diversity labels apply it’s hard to know which will become irrelevant first. I identified myself as bisexual and came out to my friends after I met my partner back in 2019 which was also when I moved to London! I met her in my previous job and albeit the firm’s D&I agenda, we did not come out to our team members and colleagues until much later. I have been a part of Mazars since February 2021 and since then, I have ensured that my relationship and my orientation is not a part of my life that I veil – intentionally or unintentionally. I am happy and excited to see the firm’s inclusivity agenda and the acceptance of the team members (or as we call it in London I&S – ‘families’). With this openness, I have experienced a comfort in my own skin as well as a certain level of ‘pride’ (pun intended!) – by being and sharing my true self and with that hopefully creating a safe space for other members of the LGBTQIA+ community in my day-to-day life. My gender expression is fluid, some days I choose to express more masculine, other days more feminine and have no idea how I will express until I wake on a given day. Being non-binary, I do not identify as just male or just female but am a mixture of and none of and somewhere in between these binary genders – I love Oscar Wilde’s saying, ‘Be yourself as everyone is taken’. A motto all should live by, always be authentic and always be proud of who you are – we are all the same but uniquely different in this amazing tapestry of life. I’ve lost dear friends to suicide because they felt they would never be accepted for their true identity. It breaks my heart to think of anyone feeling that way and take much pride in my work promoting LGBT+ rights and inclusion - I dream of a world free from hate, prejudice and discrimination - CorporateQueer really helps on this journey of acceptance and visibility. From around 5 years I’ve known I was different. Thankfully I have always had a loving and supportive family, wife and children. It took a long time to feel the corporate workplace was ready. I didn’t know what it meant but I know I didn’t feel the same way as everyone around me. I remember sitting in my garden looking at the stars wishing that I could explain it. Throughout my career I have been discriminated against in every industry that I’ve worked in from fashion to modelling art, the club world and in many of the corporate companies I’ve worked with. Everything I do comes from a skill that I’ve learnt along the way. I have never seen anything as an obstacle, just an ambition. I visualise things and I make them into a reality, it happens on a daily basis. Some people might say I’m tuned in but I work hard on everything I do and things just don’t happen overnight. I prefer to work on as many projects at one time as I can. I appreciate standing out as the idea of blending in it’s quite annoying unless it’s with an interior. I often sit in boardrooms subconsciously rolling my eyes thinking people do not have a clue when I open my mouth. People are very quick to shut me down but then they take a moment and think. I believe in collaborating with young artists and people that don’t really have a platform and I do as much as I can with them to lift them up as well as create beautiful collaborations. I would say to anyone, be yourself, everyone else is already taken, especially if you are struggling. Be fearless. Be unique. If people don’t get it they don’t deserve you, but know, when you mess up take ownership and don’t dwell on it, think of a better way of doing it next time. I would say to any employers, question yourself and your hatred if that’s what you have in your heart. Empathy goes a long way. When you hire queer people know that you’re hiring a problem solver because they’ve had to deal with more than you can imagine. Some advice for people hiring, The billionaires of this planet intentionally hire queer people. Corporations work with artists to speak with audiences. Queer artists in all industries are often groundbreaking. When I started my career, I was firmly padlocked inside my closet. It was difficult enough to fit in as a woman, let alone to muddy the waters by coming out as lesbian too. I wasn’t good enough at golf or cricket, to feel like I could fit in around my cis, het, predominantly white male colleagues. I’ve seen so many barriers removed in that time. Gradually we have crept towards a more thoughtful, more inclusive and empathetic agenda, allowing a far broader and diverse workforce to join us here in our wonderful square mile. The balance of people is still visibly unequal – men to women, white to people of colour, able bodied to those with disabilities, and invisibly too, for those of us in the LGBTQ+ community - but the willingness for change is there, and that’s significant. It’s hugely important for both my wife and I that, in our industries (TV and banking), and in our London, we really see diversity and we keep on challenging what is ‘normal’. Our kids may or may end up working in London (or France, or America, or Space) – and we need to ensure that our daughter and our youngest child have every single opportunity available to them to celebrate exactly who they were born to be, without constraint or hesitation around sexual preference or gender conformity. We have come a long way. By the time I started going out with friends there was no gay scene in my area, so my social life was predominantly hanging out with my girlfriends. I had a very fortunate experience as a young gay teenager because I never experienced any homophobia, in fact everyone in my life was absolutely indifferent to my sexuality. This meant though that I hadn’t had any exposure to gay culture and the gay scene. I left Devon in 2016 to move to university all the way up in Manchester – and I am sure everyone can imagine how scary leaving a one Starbucks town to a big city felt. Very early on I met a great group of friends and we started to frequently go out on Canal Street. Despite never having any issues relating to my sexuality, this was still the first time I had ever been in my community and around other queer people. I have met some fabulous friends through the gay village and the area is so special to me. I think for a lot of queer people they feel that they have to hide their sexuality in work. My team however are nothing but supportive and make me feel that I can be myself at work. If there’s a word that resonates heavily with me, it’s visibility. It’s the primary reason I struggled for so long growing up, because the only trans women I saw growing up in the 80’s were drag queens (on television). I was convinced that I could never be the person I wanted to be and simultaneously do the things I that excited me, like flying fighter planes or racing cars. I think that’s a big part of why I’m so proud to be visible, and so passionate to use that visbility to inspire more awareness and acceptance, to show what is possible when you believe in yourself and stop questioning your right to be valid. Thankfully time has moved on since I was a kid, I think social media has helped empower communities and younger generations have a much more expansive world view of what is possible in life these days. I know if I’d have seen someone like me when I was 7yrs old it would have been a total game changer. Even so, we’re living in scary times and it feels like things are sliding backwards faster than they’re moving forwards right now. I don’t believe it’s ever been more important to take a stand and make a positive impact, to push back against the transphobia and be proud to be who you are. From navigating the challenges of growing up in a time when being openly LGBTQ+ was fraught with uncertainty, to now leading the charge for inclusivity in both the legal sphere and the world of sports, my journey reflects our times. As recently as the 1990s, it was almost impossible to be “out” as a member of the LGBTQ+ community, especially so for a pupil at the local Roman Catholic Comprehensive in the North East. You really had to be sure, as there was no way back if things didn’t work out! I am delighted this reality has now (hopefully) been confined to the history books in the UK. As the Head of Intellectual Property and inclusivity at a top 100 law firm in London, encouraging my team members and others in the office to be themselves is at the forefront of our considerations. Indeed, my practice in this area of law only underscores that diversity drives creativity, growth and prosperity. My role as the Commodore for the Sailing & Cruising Association, the UK’s leading and longest running LGBTQ+ club with around 400 members, has been the highlight of my life to date. While sailing is challenging and thrilling in equal measure, the opportunity to lead this diverse club to become ever more inclusive has been hugely rewarding. The Club was originally started in 1980s for gay men, but we now continue to strive to add more members from our wider LGBTQ+ community, with an increasingly diverse membership. I started dancing socially in my late teens mostly as a way to access a more sober-friendly nightlife scene, and danced salsa/bachata almost every night of the week for a while. I stopped any partner based dancing for the first three years I was transitioning medically due to the awkwardness of navigating heteronormative dance spaces; discovering Pink Jukebox a couple of years ago was a wonderful door back into the world of social dance, and I’ve since dropped in and out of tango, hustle and jive. A large part of social dance is being attuned to the physical cues of your partner’s body - cis people tend to either shy away from or fetishise trans people’s bodies, but dancing with others in long established, intergenerational queer settings, I can feel seen in a more normal and frank way. Personally, I’ve found amazing lifelong friendships here, and I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who’s been part of the ride. Forget the stereotype of lycra-clad middle-aged men. LDN RIDERS is a cycling club that breaks the mould, welcoming cyclists of all ages, genders, ethnicities, and sexualities. My own cycling journey began in my mid-30s during lockdown. It offered a much-needed escape, a chance to exercise, connect, and explore the outdoors. But finding riding buddies proved tricky. Existing LGBTQ+ cycling clubs didn’t quite click. So, in September 2021, with just 5 members, LDN RIDERS was born. Fast forward a year, and we’re the UK’s largest LGBTQ+ cycling club! In a city like London, LGBTQ+ socialising often revolves around nightlife. LDN RIDERS offers an alternative – a chance to build connections with fellow cyclists who share lived experiences. It’s about inclusivity, not exclusivity. We have allies too! This is a space where you can feel seen, safe, and most importantly, welcome. The beauty of LDN RIDERS is its versatility! We cater to a range of interests: Social Butterflies – those looking to make new friends (or maybe more), Fitness Fanatics who want to push their cycling limits and train with a supportive group and Night Owls who want to swap late nights for early starts. I was honoured to be invited by SportingQueer to feature in this important showcase celebrating queer sportspeople. But, my first request was that I wanted the shoot to include other club members. We actually met at an adult gymnastics class and as soon as I saw her I knew she was going to be someone special in my life. I had been in the closet for around four years, before eventually coming out. I was so nervous to do so, especially as a Christian, but I wanted to show that regardless of your sexuality that you are deserving of love. They offer a judgment-free space, where the bond between horse and rider is built on a foundation of mutual trust and respect. From my earliest memories, horses have been my first love, a passion that has shaped my life in profound ways. Growing up, and even now, I’ve kept this passion somewhat guarded, fearful of judgment and increasingly concerned about the ethical implications of equestrian activities. My reticence, however, belies a deep and abiding love for these magnificent creatures. Being around horses, I find a sense of belonging that eludes me elsewhere. They offer a judgment-free space, where the bond between horse and rider is built on a foundation of mutual trust and respect. This connection is not merely about riding; it’s a partnership of souls, where the horse’s trust in their rider is a gift of immeasurable value, to be cherished and never betrayed. This unique bond, this sanctuary where acceptance and understanding thrive, may explain why the equestrian world is a haven for many in the LGBTQ+ community. It’s a place where love for horses bridges differences, creating a community united by a shared passion. I was inspired by a PE teacher in the 1980 who’s believed in me. I then wanted to become a PE teacher too to help others. I knew I was different, but didn’t quite know how or what it was called. Coming from a very small mining town in Yorkshire with no-one in the family having been to University I was the first to break free to try and find myself and the University of Warwick allowed me to be just that, me, Lisa. I flew out of the closet aged 17 when my Dad caught me kissing my girlfriend – and well, never really looked back. Sport and recreation really is for everyone which is why I wanted to showcase this through the great work of SportingQueer. I am sure there are still many challenges ahead but with the phenomenal athletes, coaches, officials, leaders and allies in SportingQueer – we are all making a difference. There are hundreds of sports and activities to enjoy and my dream is that they are all inclusive and they create a space for everyone to belong. As a leader in the sector I have been incredibly well supported by so many pioneers and inclusive mentors. I want to ensure I can continue to do the same for others – to enable all people to grow and to blossom into the best possible version of their whole selves. I want a society where everyone is valued, can contribute and feels they belong and a world where my wife and two daughters can flourish and be respected and valued for just being their unique selves. Working with Donna Fraser and Ethan Akanni we brought a group together - creating some sort of network, in 2019. We arranged our first Forum and the Athletics Pride Network was borne. As the Summer of 2024 approaches there are now similar networks either in place or unfolding in another 10 sports. We are Proud of what we started. We had found it hard to see a public facing message on any part of the subject of LGBTQ+ inclusion and equality in many sports let alone Athletics so the opportunity to celebrate who we are and what we represent has allowed us to live our authentic self and opened new doors for many. We comprise Internationals and “Ordinary” club members – we boast two Stonewall Champions, 3 Olympians (so far), and Members aged from Under 20 to Over 60. We want to celebrate of how our sport offers inclusive opportunities whilst also recognizing that we are not perfect and there are things we can do better or things we need to start doing. We offer a safe and inclusive space to talk about our journeys, explore the right way to support each other and others. We are in place on Facebook and Instagram and numbers exceed 100. Members have come out as part of their journey with us but we have also faced challenges, not least the debate around Trans-inclusion. We want to make sure the sport is about celebration and challenge - our sport is inclusive and open, BUT there have been times when lack of education or, indeed, more direct Homophobia (and most recently Transphobia) has led to issues being faced. Penny Briscoe the Director of Sport was addressing a group of wannabe athletes who had the chance to make it to the London 2012 Paralympic Games as part of the ParalympicsGB team. What a dream, what an opportunity, what a moment to decide I would try my best with the bits of me that still worked to be one of those people, to live in the now and to change my life for the better. It often amazes me how things coincide or follow on from one another, almost as if they’re meant to be....a few months after that interaction with Penny, I was leading out the GB Sitting Volleyball team at the World Championships in Oklahoma, watching on the side lines was the person responsible for organising London 2012 volleyball and, although I didn’t know it as the time, my future wife. Sport is powerful, sport is formidable, it has taught me more about myself then I ever knew. Throughout my journey, I’ve always looked like I’ve been thriving, but the truth is, it’s been a rollercoaster and those experiences made me into the strong person I am today. I was always told to do a sport I would ‘succeed’ at, and as a person of colour, swimming was not part of that stereotype. Not having many elite mixed-race role models encouraged me to suppress my sexuality, as I didn’t want to be further different from everyone else. I soon learnt that I was born to stand out and speak up for what is right, and I’ve been overjoyed hearing how many people I have inspired along the way just by being me. Coming out in sport was liberating, as I could finally show up to training and competitions being my true authentic self and there’s no greater feeling in the world than being ‘you’.
