Irish Nurses in the NHS on Display at the Whittington Hospital until J

We are thrilled and delighted that Fiona’s portraits of 20 of the over 30,000 young Irish women who came to train in the NHS, will be on display at the Whittington Hospital 4th floor atrium throughout the festive season and into 2026. Lise designed and laid out the exhibition boards. We spent the day putting up all the portraits and enjoying the spectacular view.

From the 1940s - 80s these young women left their homes and families to come to live in the nurses accommodation and be trained to become an integral part of the NHS.

Their incredible stories have been captured by the brilliant Louise Ryan and Grainne McPolin and can be found in their book Irish Nurses in the NHS.

We celebrated launching the show with several of the nurses in the portraits and Baroness Julia Neuberger, chair of the Whittington Health Trust.
